The week, place by place

Each day gives the sky, the daytime high and the night’s low, and the chance of rain when it’s 10% or more. Amber marks a 30% chance of rain or more, wind of 20 mph or more, and 40°F or below or 95°F or above. The forecast is for the NWS’s 2.5 km grid cell at each place (its height is given), so a peak or a canyon nearby can differ. Each name links to the place’s page, with the hour-by-hour detail on the NWS’s own page.

Where this comes from

Forecasts and alerts come from the National Weather Service’s forecast for each place’s grid cell and its active California alerts (beach and marine alerts left out). A place is listed under an alert when the alert names its forecast zone, county or fire weather zone. Forecast highs on the map are the NWS’s National Digital Forecast Database, and rain is NOAA’s radar mosaic. Chain controls are Caltrans’s current listings on every state route. Sunset is worked out from the sun’s position at each place (NOAA’s method), for today.

The page is checked every 30 minutes. Forecasts change; for a ride, check again on the day and look at the place’s page, which has the closures and chain controls on the roads in where we follow them. No closure or chain control listed is not the same as open: see Caltrans QuickMap.

The same forecast highs are a layer on the cycling and motorcycling maps, and the rain radar is on live traffic. Riding roads this week gives the forecast, closures and chain controls on each motorcycle riding road.
