How to get a police accident report in California

A crash report is kept by the agency that took it, usually the California Highway Patrol, a city's police or the county sheriff. Ask that agency for a copy. This page helps you find which one.

Safe Streets Map isn't a government agency or a law firm, and this page isn't legal advice. Who can get a report, the forms, the fees and the rules are set by each agency and can change, so follow the agency's own instructions.

Who took the report

If you have a report number, ask the agency that gave it to you. If not, where the crash happened is the best guide.

Of the 272,952 crashes reported in California so far in 2026:

Each city's page lists which agencies took this year's reports there: find your city.

Asking for a copy

CHP reports: the CHP takes requests online through its Crash Portal and at its Area offices. Its Request a Crash Report page explains who can ask, the form and the fee.

City police and sheriff reports: ask that agency's records unit. Its website explains how.

The DMV: a police report and a DMV report are separate, and the DMV may require drivers to report a crash themselves. See the DMV's page on collisions.

Common questions

How do I get a police accident report in California?
Ask the agency that took the report: usually the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the city's police or the county sheriff. Of the 272,952 crashes reported in California so far in 2026, the CHP took 55%, city police 33% and sheriffs 9%. Each agency explains how to request a copy on its own website.
Can I get a CHP accident report online?
The CHP has an online Crash Portal (crashes.chp.ca.gov) for requesting its crash reports. The CHP's Request a Crash Report page explains who can use it and the other ways to ask.
Do I also need to report a crash to the DMV?
Possibly: a police report and a DMV report are separate, and the DMV may require drivers to report a crash themselves. See the DMV's page on collisions for when and how.
Can Safe Streets Map look up my crash report?
No. The state's open crash data, which our pages are built from, has no names and no copies of reports. Ask the agency that took the report.

Safe Streets Map isn't a government agency or a law firm, and this page isn't legal advice. Who can get a report, the forms, the fees and the rules are set by each agency and can change, so follow the agency's own instructions. We can't look up or send a report: the state's open crash data has no names or report copies. Counts are this year's reports in the California Crash Reporting System (CCRS), by each report's agency code; reports arrive days to months after a crash, so recent weeks are still coming in. How the data works.
