Each collision counted once, on the first freeway or highway the CHP names (else the first street), so a crash at an interchange counts for one road; a freeway's own page counts every collision that names it. Busy freeways always have the most: a count, not a risk.

What this counts

Every collision on the CHP's live list, counted on the day it first appeared there, for the 7 full days before today. We read the list about every minute and keep each collision once. These are first reports from CHP dispatch, and only the crashes the CHP handles: freeways, state highways and roads outside city limits.

A stretch with no reading of the list is said as such: a collision that came and went in it isn't in the count. Busy roads have the most collisions because they carry the most traffic; we have no traffic counts, so nothing here is a rate or a risk. Rebuilt every hour.

Watch the day hour by hour: replay today. Crashes reported over years, by city: crash statistics.
