What this replay shows
Every collision on the CHP's live list today, from the first time we read it on the list to the last, played back from midnight to now. We read the list every few minutes; a stretch with no reading is shown in grey and skipped, never as a quiet road. The numbers beside the map are for the area the map shows, or all of California.
The rain is the weather station nearest the middle of the map (National Weather Service) and, for the last two hours or so, NOAA's radar. Slow traffic can't be replayed: Mapbox keeps no history of it. For what's happening now, see the live traffic map.
These are first reports from CHP dispatch, and only the crashes the CHP handles: freeways, state highways and roads outside city limits. Busy freeways always have the most; a count isn't a risk.
