How to read this map
- Green lines are footpaths, shared paths and pedestrian streets away from cars.
- Grey roads are busy roads: cross them at a signal. Thicker means bigger.
- Rings are crash hotspots. Tap one to see what usually happens there and what to watch for.
The heatmap shows where pedestrian crashes cluster. Zoom in and it gives way to individual crashes; tap one for the date, lighting, where the person was and what the driver was doing.
California pedestrian law
CVC § 21950: drivers must yield to people in a marked crosswalk, or an unmarked one at an intersection. People walking still must not step out suddenly in front of a car too close to stop.
Freedom to Walk Act (2023): police can only stop you for crossing outside a crosswalk if there was an immediate danger of a crash.
CVC § 21956: outside business and residential districts, walk close to the left edge of the road, facing traffic, where there's no sidewalk.
