How to read this map

Green roads are popular riding roads. Tap one for what it's like and what to watch for.
Orange roads are stroads: wide roads posted 35 mph or more where cars turn left across you at side streets and driveways, like Olympic Blvd. Thicker means faster or wider.
Red stretches are where motorcycle crashes keep happening. Thicker means more crashes. Tap one to see how riders crash there.
Brown dashes are gravel and dirt. Take care on street tyres.
The heatmap shows where crashes cluster. Zoom in for individual crashes with date, lighting and crash type.

Most city police reports in CCRS have no coordinates, so cities are undercounted and the map leans towards CHP highways and canyons.

Lane splitting (CVC § 21658.1) is legal. CHP's safety tips warn that the danger grows with the speed difference and overall speed.

Helmets (CVC § 27803): every rider and passenger must wear a DOT-compliant helmet.

Check Caltrans for closures, since many canyon roads close for snow, rockslides and fire.

Expect sand and rocks in corners after storms, and cyclists and slow traffic around blind bends.
